Flight makes emergency landing after American Airlines first officer falls ill

A Dallas-bound American Airlines flight made an emergency landing in St. Louis on Monday morning, after the plane's first officer fell ill on board.

The first officer in the cockpit of?American Airlines Flight 2309 had a medical emergency sometime after the MD80 aircraft took off from Chicago at 9:53 a.m. CT.?The first officer may have suffered chest pains,?according to NBCChicago.com.

"Another pilot was in the jump seat and took over?the duties of the first officer," airline spokesperson Mary Frances Fagan said in a statement.

The plane landed safely at 10:51 a.m. CT in St. Louis, where paramedics took the first officer off the aircraft and to a nearby hospital.

A new cockpit crew was assigned in St. Louis, and the resumed?flight was expected to land in Dallas at 1:37 p.m. CT.
